Vikas had been following the monsters' scents since the path and hid behind a null, his gaze assessing. Why were they here? He watched Kross dart out and cursed under his breath, though it didn't appear that they saw him.
He stunted his movements and froze watching them. It was an adult and from what he could guess, an adolescent. They were communicating he could tell, but didn't understand.
They started to move and if they went near the den, then the new alpha would have to confront them. Though he didn't wish to take on two monsters by himself, he would for his pack.

"Did you hear something?" Bryce asked swinging his auburn hair to look into the growing shadows. He was sure he'd heard something moving in the woods.
"Trust me boy, What you hear is never as dangerous as what you don't. Does that game boy have a flash light on it?" Caine asked as he snapped over the foliage.
"No, but your phone does. Hand it over." The father dug in his deep pocket for the smart phone and tossed it to his son. In seconds the road before them was awash with light. Something flashed in their vision and a scuttle of foliage told them they'd spooked a squirrel. "I want to go home Dad."

Vikas winced when the bright light flashed past his eyes and he thanked the tiny squirrel who rushed up over his head. It seemed to distract the monsters from his position.

Caine placed his burly hand over his sons shoulder and swung the light about. "Damn thing doesn't have much charge. We need to hurry." The boys took off faster through the undergrowth and nearly collided with an over turned tree. The smell of dead fish was unmistakeable.
"Good God!" Caine growled covering his nose. "What on earth is that?"
"I don't know, fish? Maybe some otter left his catch." Bryce thought aloud.

Vikas followed, his steps remaining light. An interesting scent wafted on the breeze from the monsters....fear? What do they have to be afraid of?
His eyes scanned their pelts and was intrigued by the lack of fur. They only had it on their heads and the larger male had some on his muzzle. Weren't they freezing out here?

The pair darted through the folliage. Bryce was sure something was following them but he didn't want to look back. The darkness was pulling in from all sides and Dad's charge was fading fast.
Bryce had begun to run and nearly hit the fence in his hurry. From the curses his dad threw, he hadn't been as lucky. Both city boys dug around the fence until they found the hole they had come in at and borded their dark blue jeep.
"Away we go!"
"Bye bye creepy ass woods!

Myria had followed Vikas's scent, only to smell something odd.
It must be the monsters...they have odd paw prints...I should hurry. The beta stalked silently, only to hear loud romping through the woods. She immediately circled around in the opposite direction from the shining light. Inadvertently, the grey female stumbled upon Vikas.
She crouched low near him, keen eyes watching the monsters with an odd fascination.

Vikas chased them to the edge of the territory, his heart thudding when they climbed into the dark beast and sped off. He panted and snorted once in their direction daring them to come back.
He needed to tell Revera. Vikas turned and spotted Myria and let out a very unmanly yelp.
Clearing his throat he yelled, Myria! How long have you been there?

The beta raised a brow.
I came around the lake just as they decided to flee. I circled back around and saw you. I then followed after them...and you. Do not feel too bad...not many can pick out my presence when I'm stalking. I am the Grey Phantom, afterall. the beta raised a semi-smug grin before glowering at the shiny beast as it fled.
That is the shiny pelt Revera spoke of? she questioned.

Vikas shook off the fright she gave him and looked back towards the path, Yes, I've seen that beast take the lives of many creatures, not just wolves.

Myria nodded, visualizing the destructive power behind the shiny pelt.
Why do you think they came into our territory?....Do you think they left their bait here? the female questioned, recalling Vikas's words on poisoned food.

Vikas shook his head, No I've been trailing them the entire time. I think they came here to scope out our territory. It makes me wary to say the least.
His eyes flashed to her, Let's head back, the others must be worried and I want to give this update. We must find a way to close that hole in the hard vines

Myria nodded at Vikas before following after him, her amber eyes sweeping over the area one last time.

"The PH level in the lake is fine." Corey called to his associate on the beach. He was a tall man about 6,1' with tan skin and blackish brown eyes. Head scientist for the Yellow Stone National Park, and particurally a wolf expert.
"So its not something in the water." His associate joked back with a smile. "These wolves are so much smarter than any we've encountered before."
"Well," Corey spoke standing straight. "Wolves naturally are smarter. It's believed they can count, and have complex social hierarchy. But pulling our camera out of the tree."
"And smashing it as soon as we see their den."
"That's unusual."
"Maybe its their breeding?" The intern offered. Corey nodded, thinking on that. "Maybe. We would need to get a sample, but these wolves seem to smart to fall for any trap we set. It's like they know the food isn't safe."
"Let's trank them. That red one we always see seems to be thier leader. We get him, run a few blood tests. Get a collar on him and we're golden."
"That's not a bad idea." Corey mussed. "Anyone checked the radar on B216?"
"Last I saw he was up by Maple Grove road. Bout a half mile from here."
"He's a good wolf. Surprised he isn't the alpha by now."
"He might be."
"Well, lets turn this ship around and head back. It's getting dark. I don't want to be out while they're hunting."
"Yep."
