Rayne weaved her sleek body in and out of the trees, taking the same paths she used when she moved in the shadows. It was uncommon for her to be accompanied when on night patrol, but this time she welcomed the company of her alpha. Kiba was out there, somewhere and Rayne prayed still in one piece.
She sniffed along the forest floor, ignoring the pungent odor of rabbit urine calling her to hunt. The elk's meat she and Revera had slaughtered was still in her system and she wouldn't have been able to eat anyway.

A rustling caught her attention, causing the black female's ears to perk up. Was it Kiba?! but when the pheasant launched from its hiding place, Rayne felt her heart sink. Kiba....where are you?
She tried to keep her emotions in check and having Revera next to her was helping until she climbed onto a fallen log and caught a scent she would recognize anywhere.
Revera! He is this way! I found his scent! The temporary joy she felt was replaced with knowing fear as the familiar musky scent was corrupted with an odor she never wanted associated with him. Blood....his blood was everywhere.
Rayne lept from the downed tree and walked along where it was clear that the vegetation had been disrupted. Almost as if it were a play, the forest begged to tell her the story of Kiba's fight with the bear.
She circled around, blue eyes gathering every bit of information possible. Suddenly, her trail led her to a tree which had suffered the brunt of Kiba's weight. She reared up and placed her paws on the blood-stained bark Kiba....
Turning to her alpha, Rayne's celestial eyes expressed everything her heart was feeling, We're close now. He can't be far off...

*1 day ago* Kiba limped hurriedly through the trees trying to think of his next move. wounded and hungry he felt his strength starting to weaken. damnit... he paused for a moment to think. sitting down he tried to look himself over while he still could. the slashes in his side were deeper than he first thought and the tree hadn't been a picnic. his side was tender and cut. a large amount of flesh also had been cut though it was fairly shallow this might not be easy... but i need to find some food it may not be much of an option for long taking in his surroundings first he tuned in his other sense. slowly his eyes closed as he waited. he could hear thousands of sounds many indicating prey was near. slowly opening his eyes he knew what that meant. i'm not a threat to them in this condition, they can sense it, they know im not a threat. that i can't hunt... he paused i'll just have to keep going. standing he turned to look around. though his situation grew worse and worse for some reason he didn't seem to feel any fear. his thoughts drifted back to a time before this to when his father had spoken to him. the words he told him echoed in his mind "never give in even if it kills you to get where you're going, never give in" i won't fail this time i promise you moving slowly he thought to himself i'm coming, Rayne i'm on my way

Revera panted trying to follow her frantic friend. She couldn't deny the pressence of blood but her eyes wasn't just on her beta. What she failed to see was the rip in the trees and the maul of the ground. Revera reared pulling down a clump of black fur from a low hanging branch. She looked out at the scene before her. he wouldn't have taken the bear close to the den. The trees are narrower over there. That would have beat at him and kept Kiba clear of its paws. She rushed down that path keeping Rayne in sight. She threw her head back and howled loudly. Hoping he heard.

Only silence greeted Revera's howl. Beside her she could almost hear the sound of her friends heart breaking. Rayne I'm sorry but It's late. We need to go back. Worry pooled in both she wolves eyes but Revera just couldn't think of anything else to be done that would be safe for her friend. Plus Alira had been alone to long. Pups could get in so much trouble without supervision.

Rayne tapped her tail a few times, her heart tearing in two. She wanted to leap from her stead and find her mate no matter what, but the knowledge of the pups within her at such a fragile time distilled her warrior instinct to react on a whim.
She turned her eyes to Revera You want to go back when Kiba's scent is everywhere? I just can't do that. He is close, I can feel it
But with the now familiar rumble in her stomach, Rayne winced. It was close now, so close to the date and she knew Kiba would never forgive her or himself if their pups were endangered.
With a snarl at her lack of choices, Rayne turned and followed Revera back to the den. She knew Alira had to be worried by now. Instead of moving to the den with her alpha, Rayne turned and looked into her eyes He is close, I know he is. I'm going to the mountain top to call for him. The other pack won't dare attack us when they know a bear or a mountain lion is nearby. Besides, they already know where we are anyway. I'll keep watch, but call for my mate at the same time....It's the only way I'll keep my heart from breaking.

Revera nodded a d drew a lick across her betas cheek. Be careful my friend with that she slipped into the den and curled against her little red pup. Letting the fluttery heart beat sing her to sleep.

Rayne sprinted down the mountain howling to her pack mates as she passed He's back! Kiba is back!
Twisting her sleek frame through the trees, the yearning female became as a shadow on the wind, her paws barely touching Earth long enough to stick. He was close, very, very close.
She smelt the wind catching his familiar musk twinged with blood.

As kiba approached the den he could hear Rayne's howling. he knew she was getting close and that she would soon reach him. he smiled to himself as he went. all will be well soon he stumbled a few steps closer to the den. the treck he had taken was a long one and he had grow weary. his eyes rolled ever so slightly as he got close. the stress along with the lose of blood had taken its toll. but he wasn't anywhere near death, just exhaustion and hunger caused this. he came to the edge of the dens territory and finally sat down. as he looked he saw his mates approach and her wild frenzy to get to him. his face showed that of relief. she is here, she's really here unable to stand much longer he laid himself down. i hope she understands i'm not in the best of shape... but no mater what i would love to see that smile of hers
he waited quietly fo her to reach him hoping she would take it easy on him.

Rayne followed the scent of blood mixed with pride and nearly tripped over her own paws as she skidded to a stop just in front of the large male wolf. Her celestial eyes took in his bloodied frame with quiet shock; he was worse off than she feared.
He smiled wearily at her before his back legs gave out and he fell in an exhausted heap. Rayne felt her heart burst with worry, agitation and the most overwhelming relief she had ever known as she ran to his side Kiba....Kiba can you hear me?
Her mate acknowledged her presence by licking her black face gently Told you I would be back... Rayne wasn't sure if she wanted to jump him with excitement or bite out a chunk of his fur for worrying her as much as he had.
But with the pain-filled moan that escaped his powerful throat Rayne felt an embarrassing moisture come to her eyes as she snarled Don't ever do that to me again. We are going to talk about this later. His ears flicked up at the tone in her voice but didn't argue, knowing he would get an earful for scaring her so badly. Though he knew that she was trying so hard to hold in all of her joy that the black female was shaking with the effort.
She bent down and allowed him to rest his mighty body against her much smaller frame. Though he easily weighed twice as much as she, Rayne wouldn't have traded the feel of his muscles against her for anything the world could offer.
He was back and though a bit worse for wear, he was alive. Her mate was alive, he had come back to her.
