Revera tucked the young body against the warmth of her fur. I was hard to believe that nothing would ever come of this action. She hadn't been able to save her son and she feared she would fail again.
"I'm so sorry Sky." She murmurred against his crown. The cold night bore witness to her lone burial. No one else had a chance to know him. No one else knew that his claws were pink instead of black.
Only the gods would know exactly what was lost that day. "I love you Sky. You have to know that."
She knelt and ripped into the ground with strong front paws. The tears burning her eyes like the flames that had stolen her family so long ago.
"I failed." She howled. The crusty snow mixed with her tears in the grave. "I failed you Sky. I'll never forgive myself. Not for you or Alira. You're my son and I love you..."
Finally the hole was dug and the body of the white wolf dressed like an angel among the maw of the earth. Revera nuzzled her son in the cavern one more time before filling in the hole.
"Alpha, Beta, accept my son. Tell him how much he was loved and show him how to love himself. Make him a blessing to your world. The blessing I know he was meant to be."
The alpha would have howled. Her soul begged for it. Her heart burned to tell the world of its loss but the security of many must come before the needs of the few. So with a heavy heart the alpha left her angel and went back to the pups still breathing.
